Privacy Policy
Last updated: 3 July 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Snapfari ("we", "us") collects, uses and protects your personal data when you use our website snapfari.app and the Snapfari mobile app (together, the "Service"). We are committed to processing your data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is Boris Chabirand, an individual established in France. For any question about this policy or your data, contact us at contact@snapfari.app.
2. What data we collect
Account data
- Email address, to create and secure your account and send confirmation/service emails.
- Username / display name, the pseudonym you choose, shown in the app.
- Password, stored only in hashed (encrypted) form; we never see it in clear text.
- Subscription status, whether your account has an active Snapfari+ subscription and until when (see section 5). We never receive your payment details.
In-app data
- Your collection and progress, the species you identify, capture quality grades, XP, achievements and friends, as well as your daily capture count and rewarded-ad credits (used to apply the free daily capture limit).
- Location (GPS), only if you grant location permission, the coordinates of a capture are saved so you can later view your captured animals on a map. You can refuse or revoke this permission at any time in your device settings.
Technical data
- Basic technical information needed to operate the Service (e.g. device/app version, and IP address transmitted to our service providers when loading content).
3. About your photos
When you snap an animal, the photo is sent securely to our identification server, where it is processed automatically and only for that capture: recognizing the species, scoring the quality of your shot (its capture grade) and checking that it is a genuine sighting (anti-cheat). The photo is deleted from our server after processing; it is never used for advertising and never shared with third parties. Your capture photos stay on your device, and only the resulting capture (species, grade, date and, if enabled, location) is saved to your collection.
If you attach a photo to an in-app bug report, that photo is stored privately with your report and used only to investigate the issue.
4. Advertising in the app (rewarded ads)
Snapfari shows optional rewarded ads: free players can choose to watch a short video ad to earn an extra capture for the day. An ad never plays without your action, and Snapfari+ subscribers never need them.
Ads are served by Google AdMob. On first launch, a consent form (a Google-certified consent management platform) asks whether you accept personalized ads; on iOS, Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt additionally lets you allow or refuse tracking. Depending on your choices, Google may process your device identifiers (such as the advertising ID), IP address and ad interaction data to serve and measure ads, personalized ads only with your consent, otherwise non-personalized ads based on context. You can change your choices at any time in your device settings (iOS: Settings → Privacy → Tracking).
Learn more in Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses data from apps that use its services.
5. Snapfari+ subscription and payments
The optional Snapfari+ subscription (unlimited captures) is purchased through the app store of your device (Apple App Store or Google Play). Payment is handled entirely by the store: we never receive or store your card or bank details. To activate your subscription, our partner RevenueCat validates the purchase and shares with us your pseudonymous user identifier, subscription status and expiry date. You can manage or cancel the subscription at any time in your store account settings; deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
6. Why we use your data and our legal bases
- To provide the Service (account, collection, gameplay, the daily capture quota), performance of our agreement with you (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)).
- To process your Snapfari+ subscription, performance of our agreement with you (Art. 6(1)(b)).
- To save capture locations on a map, your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time.
- To show personalized ads, your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)), withdrawable at any time; non-personalized ads rely on our legitimate interest in funding the free Service (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- To secure the Service and prevent abuse (e.g. anti-cheat checks, capture limits), our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- To send service emails (confirmation, beta updates), agreement performance / your consent.
7. Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the following providers:
- Supabase (authentication and database), stores your account and collection data.
- Hostinger International Ltd. (hosting), hosts our website and our identification server in the EU.
- Google AdMob, serves the optional rewarded ads in the app (see section 4). For personalized ads, Google processes data as described in its own privacy policy.
- RevenueCat, Inc., validates and manages Snapfari+ subscriptions (see section 5).
- Google Fonts, when loading our pages, your IP address is transmitted to Google to deliver fonts.
Some providers may process data outside the EU/EEA. Where that happens, transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
8. Cookies & analytics
Our website uses Google Analytics 4 (loaded via the Google tag and Google Tag Manager), which helps us measure audience and understand how the site is used (aggregated statistics). These analytics cookies and the related data collection are only activated with your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)).
When you first visit, a banner lets you accept or decline. By default, and until you accept, no analytics cookies are set and Google's tags run in a consent-denied mode. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time via the Cookie settings link in the footer. Strictly necessary cookies needed to operate the site do not require consent.
9. How long we keep your data
We keep your account and collection data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we erase or anonymise your personal data within 3 years of account closure, except where the law requires us to keep certain records longer (e.g. subscription transaction records kept for accounting purposes). Your ad-consent choices are stored on your device.
10. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your data, and the right to data portability. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. To exercise these rights, email contact@snapfari.app.
If you are in the EU and believe your rights are not respected, you can lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority (in France, the CNIL, cnil.fr).
11. Security
We use reputable providers and technical measures (encryption in transit, hashed passwords, access controls) to protect your data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your information safe.
12. Children
The Service is not intended for children under 15. We do not knowingly collect data from children below that age. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version here and update the "Last updated" date. Significant changes may also be notified by email.
